When we look at the circular economy loop where the projects can take root, we often see many alternatives sources of materials that can fill the production need. And on the other side we often see huge volumes of waste and think that there must be something that can be done with it better than burying or burning it.
Then came the idea of mapping potential usages of wastes to produce alternative sources of material. We hope that this free of access map helps to start reflections and conversations about such potential more sustainable options of industrial ecology. But also, even if not for the sake of business activities, this map can serve individuals simply looking for ideas on how to reuse what other wise could be disposed of, thus lowering landfills.
No matter if its for a weekend personal hobby or to expand a project into a business, we can help you structure the best circular economy project within your budget and available resources.
6 colors are set to represent the different classification hierarchy levels of the map filtering process and end usage. Each level of hierarchy can be better identified.
You may choose to filter the map from any or all these 6 options by opening the dropdown list.
When opening the dropdown list, you can also check many boxes to increase your results.
This map is open to public contributions upon sending us your suggestions. We are also open to learn about your circular economy project and will be happy to offer our support in evaluating business case avenues if you wish so.
The Circular Symbiosis Map is based on the Butterfly Diagram by Ellen McArthur Foundation, which states the continuous flow of materials in two cycles: the technical and biological. The technical cycle involves keeping products and materials in use through reuse, repair, remanufacturing, and recycling, while the biological cycle returns nutrients from biodegradable materials to the Earth to support natural regeneration.

These are all the items that are part of our platform and they represent the different transformation steps of the waste in question. Types, refers to the broad category of the waste (mechanical or organic). Categories, reflects where the waste comes from. We offer over 20 categories that range from animals to plastic. Source is the waste itself, before any kind of transformation. Materials, is the waste after its first transformation, and subproduct, is the waste after a second transformation leading to a final commercial product.
The aim of this platform is to create the largest subproducts to usage repository. The goal is to help individuals or commercial projects identify circular economy opportunities in the most simple and accessible way, without any upfront costs or having to do too much research.
The data is free to access and use for personal or commercial purpose. To start a business project with the map´s data, you can book a meeting with us to help you establish a business case projection using the map’s data.
If you want to learn more about the transformation steps, you can start by looking up different existing projects online and can always book a free meeting with us to help establish a plan.
Many of the materials are available in most of the countries. We encourage to buy, and use wasted materials, through second hand redistribution stores, marketplace local platforms or directly with the place producing the waste you want to use for your project.
We help you convert your ideas into a feasible project. If you want more information, book a free meeting with us so we can walk you through the process of making a business case, scenario, timeline and costs model.
You can contribute to our map, by making materials to usages suggestions. Please select the form’s Contribution option, and share your ideas by adding the appropriate fields the information for the material, subproduct and usage. See the tutorial to that effect.
We welcome the possibility to showcase related services that can help individuals and commercial projects to take shape. If you want to offer such services, please select the Partnership option from the form and state a short description of the offer. We will then get back to you for a meeting to talk about it further.
