Founded by Pili Luna in 2015, Vos Honduras is a company committed to transforming livelihoods in coastal communities through innovative design and sustainability. Pili Luna engages multiple key partners to create a scalable, profitable, and high-impact business model. We receive funding from international development organizations to teach women from indigenous communities around the region to produce fish leather that is up to our quality standards. To supply these communities with fish skin, we partner with fish product companies who need to dispose of the discarded fish skin from their facilities. The indigenous female artisans purchase this fish skin at a reasonable price, turn it into leather, and sell the finished product back to Pili Luna with a 45% profit margin. Pili Luna then sells the leather at a premium to customers who are interested in sourcing sustainably produced and socially impactful materials. Inspired by her passion for environmental stewardship,
As a consultancy focused on supporting socially and environmentally responsible businesses, Synertium worked in sessions with Vos Honduras to refine its pitch deck, helping the organization identify key actors like Catalyst 2030 where their voice was shared to amplify opportunities. Synertium assisted in Vos Hondura´s integration into Catalyst 2030 demonstrating its contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This alliance has not only strengthened Vos Hondura´s pitch deck but also amplified its voice in the global movement towards a more sustainable future. Vos Honduras and Synertium are fostering a more equitable and environmentally responsible future, one innovative step at a time.
One of the biggest issues in Uganda is youth unemployment. Millions of people ages between 18 and 28 years old lack a job which translates in low quality of life, high violence rates, informal employment and difficulty to break the poverty cycle. To address this issue, Nsimire Aston and his team launched Prolific Innovations Limited (PIL) in 2023 as a community-based organization that trains youth on entrepreneurial, and farming skills that allow them to start their own enterprises and enhance their quality of life.
The organization has designed an agricultural method that converts waste into organic fertilizer, which can be simply replicated by young farmers to turn it into another source of income while improving the quality of their yields. So far, the organization has trained over 50 young farmers on their fertilizer method and in entrepreneurial skills which has enhance their yields ‘production, created new jobs, and empowered them on new obtaining new sources of income.
Despite their great efforts, PIL was facing one of the most common issues for non-profits, lack of funding and an structured business model that helps them obtain sources of income that can be used to enlarge their impact and take their method to the next level. That’s where Synertium comes in. As a consulting company, our team has focused on advising and accompany PIL to design the right business model that accommodates to their necessities and to identify their main gaps where funding should be allocated. Afterwards, we searched for the right kind of funding, and co-design a suitable project that can be submitted to multiple grant opportunities.
Synertium´s advisory has helped them better structure their business model by identifying specific services that can be sold to sustain their work, design a feasible pilot project that will be displayed around their territory, define an impact reporting strategy to monitor and evaluate their success and define a set of funding opportunities that fit their profile and necessities to become more economically, socially and environmentally sustainable.
Slums in Kenya suffer every day from lack of education for their youth. High-quality schools ‘fees surpass the economic capacity of the citizens, and they are usually far away from the slum area. However, there are thousands of young people, ages between 15 and 18 years old, that need a good education that nurtures them intellectually and morally to help them face the difficult context in which they live in. Aiming to contribute to this situation, Emily Osundwa decided to open her own school in the middle of Nairobi´s slums to offer a prosperous future for the children surrounding them. That is how Motherway Centre was created over 10 years ago.
Motherway Centre is a school like no other in Nairobi´s slums. Led by the Christian faith, Emily offers a unique education that focuses not only on academic excellency but also in moral rightfulness to raise good people and citizens that contribute to a better society. Due to Emily´s warmthless and great efforts, Motherway Centre has gained the appreciation of the community and students. The school has had great success over the years. It has one of the highest rates of students who go to university after graduation, serves as a shelter and haven for kids whose parents live far away and are alone in the slums, and have changed parent´s mindset regarding the importance of education.
Despite all their great efforts, Motherway is facing terrible issues after COVID-19. Due to the pandemic many students relocated, parents lost their jobs and ability to pay, teachers moved to other jobs, and kids had to drop out given their current difficulties, which translated into deep financial issues for the institution. That is why they seek Synertium´s accompaniment. As a consulting company, we helped them put their business model in place, looked for other sources of income, defined monitoring and impact evaluation processes and searched for funding opportunities to boost the school.
Additionally, a crowdfunding campaign was launched during 2023, which helped the school to acquire new desks for their students and start positioning themselves on social media. Furthermore, other sources of income were explored like sale of artisan craft to avoid the school´s closure. Thanks to all the work of Motherway and Synertium, Sustainable Development Goals 1 (No Poverty), 4 (Quality Education), and 5 (Gender Equality), and have been fostered to keep contributing to the 2030 Agenda.
Limited mindsets, poverty, low quality of life for pastors, and inadequate social infrastructure were the main challenges that led Pastor Angel Hotereshi to found the United Missionary Foundation Uganda (UMF). As a committed Christian guided by his faith, Pastor Angel was deeply aware of the numerous social and economic problems affecting the lives of thousands of Ugandans.
The pastor identified that low incomes and unemployment have reduced the ability of the Ugandan population to access basic needs such as education, food, healthcare, and security. Pastors are particularly vulnerable to this situation, with many living on less than one dollar a day, limiting their ability to fulfill their mission, support their families, and maintain a dignified quality of life.
Moreover, many social infrastructures, such as hospitals, schools, and churches, are in poor condition due to the lack of high-quality materials at affordable prices and substandard construction methods, posing a danger to citizens and putting essential social spaces at risk. Similarly, the pastor identified cultural barriers that hinder the community's ability to improve their quality of life, reflected in beliefs and mindsets that perpetuate the cycle of poverty.
To address these issues, Pastor Angel founded the United Missionary Foundation, a Christian, faith-based nonprofit organization aimed at raising societal awareness, rehabilitating social infrastructure, and supporting the social integration of pastors and their families. The church has since launched multiple successful projects, including a microcredit program, a support project for pastors' families, missionaries’ skills development, and the rehabilitation of social infrastructure. These programs have provided hundreds of children, widows, and pastors' families with food relief and school supplies every year.
Despite their commendable efforts, UMF faces critical challenges that hinder their ability to expand their impact. The lack of funding, absence of a business model, and difficulty in securing international funding are the main issues UMF needed help with, which is where Synertium stepped in. Together, we explored ways to finance their operations, designed a pilot project eligible for external funding, and structured a business model to identify potential income sources. Collaboratively, we identified the opportunities and assets available to UMF to design and execute a pilot project funded by international sources.
Through grant searches, project co-design, and business model structuring, we have helped UMF better organize their income sources and transform their current assets into potential revenue streams. Thanks to the combined efforts of UMF and Synertium, Sustainable Development Goals 1 (No Poverty), 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) have been promoted, contributing to the 2030 Agenda
